If you're starting a new venture or already run a brick-and-mortar business, lacking a website means missing out on a vast pool of potential customers. The first step to establishing an online presence is securing a domain name for your website. Don't be daunted by the process. Although it may seem complex, registering a domain name is quite straightforward. This guide will walk you through the entire process, from understanding what a domain name is to selecting the right one and understanding the costs involved.   ## Understanding the Domain Name A domain name is essentially your website's address on the internet. Each website has a unique IP address – a string of numbers like 232.54.96.169 – which is hard for customers to remember. The Domain Name System (DNS) converts these numbers into a user-friendly format – your domain name. This is the address customers will type into their browsers to find your website.   ## Types of Domain Names When choosing a domain name, you need to understand its two main components: the second-level domain (SLD) and the top-level domain (TLD). 1. **Second-Level Domains (SLDs)**: The SLD is the memorable part of your website's address, the unique name representing your brand. It's placed to the left of the TLD in a web address. 2. **Top-Level Domains (TLDs)**: TLDs are the extensions seen after the SLD and the dot. Common TLDs include .com (for commercial purposes), .org (for organizations, often non-profits), .net (initially for networking technologies but now more general), .edu (for educational institutions), and .gov (for government entities). The price of a domain name varies depending on the TLD you choose. It's important to pick a domain name and extension that represent your business niche and are easy to remember.   ## Domain Name Cost Domain names are typically registered for a year, though longer terms are available. Some web hosting plans include the cost of a domain name. At Namecorp, for example, a .com domain costs $99 for two years, including free website design with hosting plans. Additional services like WHOIS privacy protection and SSL certificates for website security are also provided. It's possible to reserve a domain name without hosting, allowing you to secure your desired name and build your website at your convenience.   ## Domain Name Registration To register a domain name in Australia, you'll need an Australian Business Number (ABN). This 11-digit number is a requirement for all business entities in the country. Applying for an ABN can be done online through the Australian Business Register, with a tax agent, or via a paper application. Namecorp simplifies this process by offering a combined application for an ABN and domain name registration.   ## Verifying Domain Name Ownership After registration, verifying your ownership of the domain is crucial. This step confirms your right to use the domain and prevents others from using it without permission. Namecorp facilitates this process by sending a verification email upon purchase, which includes simple instructions to confirm ownership. Whether you're creating an online portfolio or any other type of website, Namecorp offers customized domain services to enhance your online presence, along with ABN registration. ### Related articles [![blog image](https://businessaustralianews.com.au/hubfs/AI-Generated%20Media/Images/An%20article%20discussing%20the%20top%20ecommerce%20systems%20for%20small%20businesses%20in%202024%2c%20including%20Shopify%2c%20WooCommerce%2c%20Squarespace%2c%20Wix%2c%20and%20HubSpot%20Commerce%20H.jpeg)](https://businessaustralianews.com.au/blog/top-ecommerce-systems-for-small-businesses-in-2024) #### [Top Ecommerce Systems for Small Businesses in ...](https://businessaustralianews.com.au/blog/top-ecommerce-systems-for-small-businesses-in-2024) Choosing the right ecommerce platform is crucial for small businesses aiming to establish ...
